Bird stuck in the pavilion

Marlena Chertock

The bird was squawking
in the corner, distressed
and feathers everywhere.
I was walking out
but he kept pressing
his beak into the wall,
I couldn’t leave him
like that. I found a shirt
left on the floor
and scooped him up.
He was unhappy
and continued squawking,
but he didn’t struggle.
I let him down
on the dead grass outside,
maybe dropped him too hard.
He rushed under the building,
through a hole beneath the concrete.
I followed.
He hopped into the bushes,
towards the forest.
Animals like to die
in familiarity.
