Scribbled lines

Marlena Chertock

He can’t paint
but a girl
he was dating
once said he could
write. So he’s been
writing poems for years,
working on one
for a month,
scribbled lines on
vodka-soaked papers.
Subtext says it
the way he wants,
but the context
makes him think
he can’t write
how it really happened.
He wants to know
how much
you can say
in different forms.
